In an emergency

If you have a dental emergency, you can get help at the Indiana University School of Dentistry Emergency Clinic, a walk-in clinic that sees patients on a first-come, first-served basis.

Problems that can be treated at the Emergency Clinic include:

  • Tooth or gum pain
  • Infection or abcess
  • Broken tooth

No appointment is necessary to be seen at the Emergency Clinic; it is a walk-in clinic only.

Please note that the Emergency Clinic is for new patients only. If you are a current patient, call Patient Services at 317-274-7433 to make arrangements to get emergency care at the school.

Hours

The Emergency Clinic is open on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 8–11 a.m. and 1–3:30 p.m. It is closed on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday.

We recommend that you arrive as early as possible during clinic hours. Intake times begin at 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Patients are seen on a first-come, first-served basis, and the clinic fills to capacity quickly. (Please note that we reserve the right to prioritize the order in which patients are admitted in certain situations.)

We will make every effort to see all patients who arrive during clinic hours. If you have not been seen by the time the clinic closes, you will be given priority during the next session.

After-hours emergency care

If you are a patient of record at the School of Dentistry and you have a dental emergency at night or on the weekend, call 317-944-5000 and ask for the dental resident on call.

Cost

To be seen in the Emergency Clinic, you must make a down payment of $99 at the time of service. This payment will be applied to your emergency diagnostic exam, X-rays, and any other procedures completed during the visit.

Depending on what type of treatment your case requires, there may be additional fees. You will be billed for any fees exceeding your $99 payment. If the service provided is a tooth extraction, the fee will be an additional $165 due at time of service.

The School of Dentistry accepts multiple dental insurance plans and Medicaid. Your coverage will be verified at the time of service.

If you do not have dental insurance or Medicaid, you must pay out of pocket. The school accepts cash, checks, money orders, and credit cards.

Location

The Emergency Clinic is located in the James J. Fritts, D.D.S. Clinical Care Center at 1121 W. Michigan Street in downtown Indianapolis.

You should park in the Vermont Street garage, located at 1004 W. Vermont Street. School of Dentistry staff will provide parking validation so you can exit the garage at no cost.
