The health information of patients at the Indiana University School of Dentistry is protected by a federal law called the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996, or HIPAA. The School of Dentistry is required to follow HIPAA regulations that protect the privacy and security of your health information.

Your rights under HIPAA
Under HIPAA, the School of Dentistry must comply with your right to:
- Ask to see and get a copy of your health records
- Have corrections added to your health information
- Receive a notice that tells you how your health information may be used and shared
- Decide if you want to give your permission before your health information can be used or shared for certain purposes, such as for marketing
- Get a report on when and why your health information was shared for certain purposes
Filing a complaint
If you believe your rights are being denied or your health information isn’t being protected, you have the right to:
- File a complaint with the School of Dentistry
- File a complaint with the Office of Civil Rights in the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
All complaints must be submitted in writing. You will not be penalized or retaliated against in any way for making a complaint to the School of Dentistry or the Department of Health and Human Services.
