Apply to the Graduate Cariology and Operative Dentistry Program

If you are applying to the Indiana University School of Dentistry’s Master of Science in Dentistry degree program and are planning to major in cariology and operative dentistry, you must meet the admission requirements and follow the application process outlined on this page.

The application deadline is September 1 each year.

Admission requirements

To be eligible to apply to the program, you must:

Step 2: Submit supplemental materials

All applicants

All applicants must submit the supplemental materials listed here to the School of Dentistry. Read all the instructions carefully to ensure that you submit your materials correctly.

You must submit official transcripts from all colleges and universities attended. The transcripts should include work already completed and work currently in progress. They should also include:

  • A complete list of courses taken
  • The number of credits awarded for each course or the number of hours of classroom, lecture, and laboratory
  • Grades received for each course
  • Your cumulative GPA and class rank (if your school ranked students)
  • Diplomas or certificates earned
  • Information about the school’s grading scale

If the original documents are not in English, a verified translation must be sent with your official transcripts in your native language.

If you are a U.S. applicant, you are required to submit your scores for the Integrated National Board of Dental Examination (INBDE). If you are an international applicant, you are not required to submit INBDE scores, but you may do so if you have taken the examinations.

You must submit an online request to  have your scores sent to the School of Dentistry. You will need to provide the information listed here as part of your request:

Download the certification of disciplinary history form, fill out the candidate section, and send it to your dental school. A school official must complete the form email the completed form to dsgrad@iu.edu.

International applicants

International applicants are required to submit additional supplemental materials. You are considered an international applicant if either of these statements apply to you:

  • You are a U.S. citizen, permanent resident (green card holder), refugee, or political asylee whose secondary education was outside of the U.S.
  • You are not a U.S. citizen.

If you’re an international applicant, you must have Educational Credential Evaluators review your official transcripts and provide a course-by-course report to the School of Dentistry. We will accept a copy of this report.

If English is not your native language, you must demonstrate English proficiency to be admitted to the M.S.D. program. You must earn a minimum score of 79 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) iBT or a minimum score of 6.5 on the Cambridge International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Scores must be fewer than two years old.

To submit your scores, have the testing agency send an official score report to IU Indianapolis. The institution code for IU Indianapolis is 1325 (no department code).

If you’re admitted to the program, you will need to provide financial support information to the IU Indianapolis Office of International Affairs.

After you've submitted your application

You will be notified when the School of Dentistry receives your application. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed. It’s up to you to verify that your application is complete.

After applications are reviewed, selected applicants are invited to the school for interviews. Following the interview process, applicants who are admitted to the program receive acceptance letters and contracts.
