Dean Murdoch-Kinch has announced the appointment of Kelton Stewart, DDS, MS, as assistant dean of faculty development.
Dr. Stewart is the James J. Baldwin associate professor of orthodontics and serves as the chair and program director of the Department of Orthodontics and Orofacial Genetics.
In his new role as assistant dean of faculty development, Dr. Stewart will collaborate with the Office of Faculty Affairs to:
- Create professional development opportunities and programming for faculty
- Expand mentoring and coaching programs for faculty at all levels within the institution
- Facilitate professional growth and development through strategic career planning
- Support faculty advancement through promotion/tenure consultations to discuss promotion and tenure expectations and processes.
“Dr. Stewart brings a wealth of experience and knowledge as well as a fresh perspective to his new role in the Office of Faculty Affairs,” said Dean Carol Anne Murdoch-Kinch. “Dr. Stewart has a national track record of achievement in mentoring of students, residents, and new faculty – especially people who have been historically underrepresented in dentistry – as they explore careers in dental academia. His mentoring informs his work in supporting faculty through the career planning and promotion process. He also will be working with Associate Dean Dr. Lisa Lang and the department chairs on new programs in leadership development.”
Dr. Stewart joined the IUSD Orthodontics and Oral Facial Genetics faculty in 2008. He received a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, a master’s degree in health professions education, and an orthodontic certificate at Baylor College of Dentistry in Dallas.
Dr. Stewart is a board examiner for the American Board of Orthodontics and a CODA site visitor for the Joint Commission of Dental Accreditation. He has served as president of the Indiana Association of Orthodontics and the Society of Educators of the American Association of Orthodontists. He also has served in numerous leadership positions in the American Dental Education Association, where he recently graduated from the organization’s Leadership Institute.
