Dental Care: Right, Commodity, or Social Good?
Presented by Jason T. Eberl, PhD
A perennial debate with the U.S. health care system is whether there is a right to access health, including dental, care; and, if so, to what forms or to what level of care one has a right? Or, should various forms of health care be treated as commodities to which access is determined by market forces? Another way to think about the place of health care within our socioeconomic structure is as a “social good” akin to police or fire protection, neither a right nor a commodity. A related question is whether dental care differs from other forms of health care with respect to these options. This lecture will canvass each of these positions, provide reasons for considering health and dental care as a social good, and describe how doing so may impact patient selection in dental practice.
Objectives:
•Articulate the various positions on the place of health and dental care within the U.S. socioeconomic structure;
•Critically engage with arguments for and against each of these positions;
•Analyze how each of these positions impacts dental practice with respect to selecting patients;
•Provide reasons for viewing dental care as a basic form of preventive health care.
Dr. Eberl is Professor of Health Care Ethics and Philosophy and Director of the Albert Gnaegi Center for Health Care Ethics at Saint Louis University. Dr. Eberl earned a B.A. in philosophy and Spanish from the University of San Diego, an M.A. in philosophy from Arizona State University and a
