Restoring Edentulous Patients with Contemporary Technologies and Dental Implants
Presented by Dr. Wei-Shao Lin

The treatment of complete and/or single arch edentulism remains a significant priority for dental clinicians. Patients also have emphasized immediate load or restorations with dental implants and often request complex full-arch treatments with shorter treatment times and fewer appointments. This presentation will begin with a review of diagnosis and treatment planning for edentulous patients. This topic will be followed by a discussion of proper case selection, loading protocols, team approach, and prosthetic procedures that play a role in complex therapies. In concert with these topics, new materials, technologies, and prosthetic treatment modalities will be presented that allows the clinicians to gain an understanding of recent advances in dental implant componentry. At last, the potential complications and management of these complications of the implant prostheses will be reviewed and discussed.

Learning Objectives

  1. Review relevant diagnosis, treatment planning process, risk assessments, case selection, loading protocols, and prosthetic procedures for complex full-arch cases.
  2. Highlight the interdisciplinary approach to planning and treatment for implant patients, with emphasis on the team approach.
  3. Discuss the prosthetic and mechanical complications commonly seen in implant prostheses and their management

Tooth is out, now what? Timing for extraction, implant placement or socket grafting
Presented by Dr. Waldemar Polido

Numerous details are indispensable to achieve an excellent and long lasting outcome in Implant Dentistry.  Among them is the increasing need for bone and soft tissue augmentation, in both vertical and horizontal aspects.  However, these grafts can be applied at different moments of the treatment, according to the clinical situation.  Immediate or delayed implant placement, ridge preservation procedures and staged grafts and implant placement are the possible choices to rehabilitate patients that will have unestorable teeth replaced by implants.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this presentation, participants should be able to:

  1. Assess the surgical risk in patients in need for extraction and implants ;
  2. Recognize different moments for implant placement or bone graft in relation to the extraction;
  3. Select clinical indications and techniques for immediate placement and tissue augmentation after extraction.

Dr. Polido is an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, with a Master and Doctor (PhD) degrees at the PUC University in Porto Alegre, and an OMFS Residency at the University of Texas, Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, USA.

He is a Clinical Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Co-Director of the Center for Implant, Esthetic and Innovative Dentistry at the Indiana University School of Dentistry, Indianapolis.
