What is our Hygiene Series?

This year we are excited to offer a variety of highly requested courses including pediatric dentistry, oral pathology, periodontics, smoking cessation and ethics and jurisprudence. We hope you can make it! Join us by zoom for a livestreamed presentation or at the conference itself - your choice.
New this year: all lectures will be recorded and will also be offered online to view at your convenience for non-live CE credit if you register for the series or individual courses but can not attend on the date of the event.

Don't forget - License Renewal is due March 1, 2024. You must complete the required CE credits prior to then.

This year’s programs are offered on an individual basis of $170 per day, per hygienist. Special savings: if enrollment is received in the CE office before September 15 the cost for the series will be $340 for the first hygienist and $310 for each additional hygienist from the same office. No transfers.

Pediatric Oral Radiology: From Radiation Safety to Lesions and CBCT

This seminar will provide to the attendee the most common radiographic lesions that are presented in infants, children, and adolescents. The seminar will use case-presentation as the learning and discussion format and will cover the entire spectrum of oral radiology in pediatric dentistry. Topics such as radiation safety, digital radiology, CBCT in pediatric dentistry, radiographic interpretation and common radiographic lesions in children will be covered in this seminar.
After attending this seminar, the participant will:
• Understand the importance of “building” a differential interpretation in radiology
• Learn the most common radiographic lesions in infants, children and adolescents.
• Learn the indications of CBCT within the frame of practicing pediatric dentistry
• Understand the importance of radiation safety in the practice of dentistry with children and adolescents
• Understand why the lead apron is no longer recommended during the process of taking radiographs

Pediatric Oral Pathology: From Soft Tissue Lesions to Canker Sores!!!

This seminar will provide to the attendee with the most up-to-date information regarding the fascinating and emerging field of oral pathology in pediatric dentistry. The seminar will use case-presentation as the learning and discussion format and will cover the entire spectrum of the most common oral soft tissue lesions in infants, children, and adolescents.
After attending this seminar, the participant will be able to:
• Understand the importance of “building” a differential diagnosis based on the clinical presentation of oral lesions
• Learn the most common soft tissue lesions in infants, children, and adolescents
• Learn the most updated treatment for some of the most common oral conditions besides gingivitis and dental caries

Juan F. Yepes DDS, MD, MPH, MS, DrPH is a full professor in the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and the associate dean for graduate education at Indiana University School of Dentistry and an attending at Riley Children Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana. Juan F. is also a clinical professor at the University at Buffalo. Juan F. is a dentist (DDS) and a physician (MD) from Javeriana University at Bogotá, Colombia.

Vapes and Novel Tobacco Products: Use and Cessation


This session will discuss the evolution of tobacco products from traditional cigarettes /cigars/pipes to electronic cigarettes and vaping devices. The latest developments in the nicotine and tobacco product market will be discussed as well as evidence based information on the safety of the various forms of currently available products, their impact on health and approaches for counseling patients in effective cessation strategies.
Learning objectives:

• Describe the evolving landscape of tobacco and nicotine products when reviewing patients’ tobacco use history to be able to identify next generation ENDS, heat-not-burn products, and nicotine pouch and other oral nicotine

• Assess the latest evidence on the safety of e-cigarettes and vaping, impact on health, and cessation effectiveness

Learning Outcomes
• Describe the role of the Indiana State Board of Dentistry in the governing of dental professionals
• Review Indiana statutory law for the practice of dental hygiene
• Discuss Scope of Practice
• Discuss the role of lobbying in developing legislation for the practice of dental hygiene
• Describe the difference between right, wrong and a true ethical dilemma
• Be familiar with the six steps in the ethical decision making model
• Discussion of common ethical dilemmas for dental hygienists

Laura Romito, DDS, MS, MBA, FNAP, is Associate Dean of Education at the Indiana University School of Dentistry and Professor of Biomedical Sciences and Comprehensive Care. Dr. Romito is also the Director of the Nicotine Dependence Program at Indiana University School of Dentistry.

Twyla Rader, LDH, MEd, is director of Dental Hygiene at the Indiana University School of Dentistry. She joined the DH division as adjunct clinical faculty in 2010 and has been a full-time clinical assistant professor since 2017. She was appointed as the program director in 2022. She has been a practicing hygienist since 1988 and is currently the hygienist sitting on the Indiana State Board of Dentistry.

Emerging Concepts in Periodontics: Classification, Technology and Treatment 

This course will provide you with an update on the latest classification of periodontal diseases and provide you with information on the latest technologies in periodontic treatment.
Learning Objectives:
• Understand the 2018 Classification: To understand the framework of the 2018 classification of periodontal disease and conditions.
• Explore current technologies in periodontics, with a focus on guided biofilm removal and Laser Assisted New Attachment Protocol.
• To analyze various clinical case presentations and discuss successes and challenges/shortcomings.

The How, Why and What-to-do of Oral White Lesions

The afternoon lecture will focus on oral pathology. Dr. Angela Ritchie will discuss how to identify and treat oral white lesions.
Objectives:
• Review common white lesions of the oral cavity
• Define leukoplakic vs. non-leukoplakic lesions
• Identify appropriate management plans for leukoplakic vs. non-leukoplakic lesions

Brett Freeman, DDS, is currently chief resident in the Department of Periodontology at the Indiana University School of Dentistry

Angela Ritchie, DDS, MS is Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Oral Pathology, Medicine and Radiology at the Indiana University School of Dentistry and Clinical Faculty at the Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Ritchie received her dental degree from University of Michigan School of Dentistry and a Master of Science in Clinical Research from the Indiana University School of Medicine.
