These board-approved courses provide the didactic and laboratory training required for dental assistants certification in coronal polishing and fluoride application. Training is a requirement to perform these procedures.
Requirements:
Graduate of a Commission on Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association approved program or a practicing dental assistant for a minimum of one (1) year.
Coronal Polishing Course Content:
- Overview of Ethics, Laws and Infection Control
- Understanding plaque and materia alba
- Recognizing intrinsic and extrinsic stains
- Types of abrasive agents used when performing coronal polishing
- Proper handpiece use and armamentarium
Fluoride Application Course Content:
- Overview of Ethics, Laws and Infection Control
- Effects & benefits of fluoridation
- Caries process
- Systemic fluoride
- Benefits and contraindications of topical fluoride
- Appropriate types and delivery mechanisms of fluoride for patients
All didactic instruction will be completed online. Participants will receive instructions that will allow them access to Indiana University’s Canvas system. All lecture material will be available online 24 hours a day. Participants must pass all quizzes prior to attending a laboratory session. Laboratory sessions will consist of four (4) hours of laboratory work on mannequin and fellow participants. Laboratory sessions are scheduled approximately every six weeks. Participant must demonstrate clinical competency on a minimum of five (5) patients under the direct supervision of an Indiana licensed dentist.
