Learn about our periodontal preceptorship program
The post-doctoral periodontal preceptorship is intended to be either for six months or one year in duration. It is designed to give the student, an increased level of knowledge in treatment planning, non-surgical and surgical procedures of in the specialty of periodontology and implant dentistry. Additionally, basic sciences information related to wound healing and biomaterials will be emphasized. The student is encouraged to complete a research project while in the one-year program. This project could involve but not be limited to either a review of the literature or a clinical case report. The student will NOT be providing “hands-on” treatments to patients during clinic sessions but will be expected to observe/assist periodontal graduate students and/or faculty in providing patient treatment.
Proposed Curriculum
The proposed curriclum for the periodontal preceptorship includes:
- Interdisciplinary Treatment Planning - Surgical and Restorative
- Selected Literature Review - Periodontics/Oral Surgery/Prosthodontics
- Preclinical Periodontics - Option to sit in on select lectures.
- Preclinical Prosthodontics - Option to sit in on select lectures
- Head and Neck Anatomy- Brief Review
- Oral Medicine and Pathology- Brief Review
- Clinical Periodontology and Implantology - Opportunity to assist during the periodontal and implant procedures with periodontal residents and faculty members.
The student will have the opportunity to gain experience in the above indicated areas by attending courses administered through the Department of Periodontology graduate programs. Also, interactions and communications with other disciplines (Prosthodontics, Endodontics, Orthodontics, and Radiology) will provide more experiences for inter and multi-disciplinary treatment plans.
Program Details
The student will spend the majority of his or her time in the Department of Periodontology working with graduate periodontics residents. In addition to clinic and didactic programs, following opportunities will be provided.
- Learning about research methodology
- Working on a capstone project (case portfolio)
- Writing one article for publication
- Considering some teaching time, clinical and lecturing
- One month as an elective returning to a previous assigned area
- Going to a private clinic (shadowing) which could give the preceptor some additional experience
Attending national and regional meetings is encouraged. These include meetings such as the American Academy of Pediatrics, Midwest Society of Periodontology, ITI Congress, and Academy of Osseointegration.
