Dr. Glen Karunanayake completed his dental training at Guy’s Hospital Dental School, London in 1993. He spent 10 years working as a general dentist in London before undertaking a master’s degree in endodontics at the Eastman Dental Institute, University College London in 2003. He completed his MS degree with distinction, and worked as an endodontist, seeing patients on referral in London and as an adjunct faculty at Kings College London and the Eastman Dental Institute. He was also employed as a specialty doctor seeing patients with complex medical and dental needs, at St. George’s Hospital, London. He was recognized as a specialist in endodontics, by the General Dental Council UK, following completion of the Royal College of Surgeons of England Membership examination in Restorative Dentistry. In 2018, he relocated to University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, serving as an Associate Professor, Department of Endodontics. An opportunity arose to teach at Indiana University (IU) under the mentorship of Dr. Spolnik. In 2024, he joined the Department of Endodontics. He was appointed interim chairperson of the department, following the retirement of Dr. Spolnik.
Dr. Karunanayake has lectured both nationally and internationally. He has published in the International Endodontic Journal and Journal of Endodontics. His areas of interest include management of cracked teeth, the use of Er, Cr: YSGG lasers for endodontic disinfection. He is passionate about providing excellent standards of patient care and ensuring the department continues to provide outstanding teaching resources for residents and dental students.
