Welcome, to our 2021 Recognition Ceremony!

Class of 2021, congratulations!

There is much to celebrate today as we come together to honor and recognize our graduates. To understand how amazing they are, and what they have endured and accomplished, I ask us all to reflect back to a year ago, when we were recognizing the Class of 2020. We were in the early months of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Non- emergency dental procedures and practices had been shut down here in Indiana and throughout the rest of the country. We had shifted to online learning and were hoping for a re-start of in person instruction and clinical activities by summer. We were planning for all contingencies, including possible additional interruptions in education and clinical care. Would our patients come back? How many of our own community would become sick and die? Would we be able to procure enough PPE to protect our students, faculty, staff and patients? Back then, we decided that we would place health and safety first, follow the science, and strive for an on-time graduation for our students. The top priority was ensuring that you receive adequate education and experiences to graduate as competent general dentists and specialists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, and dental technologists. That has been our obligation and commitment to you, and today we are grateful to celebrate the accomplishment of that goal, sharing this moment with friends and loved ones.

This class has overcome unique challenges and barriers over the course of their education with us, and especially during the final year, to succeed and graduate as competent, compassionate, oral health professionals. Graduates, you adapted to ever-changing conditions and requirements, navigated ambiguity and uncertainty, while fulfilling professional obligations to your patients, classmates and faculty, and personal obligations to friends and families. You dealt with your own personal challenges resulting from the pandemic. You supported each other. This past year was the dress rehearsal for your real- life performance as a health professional, as the curtain lifts, the story of your professional career starts now. You have demonstrated that you have the grit and resilience, the knowledge and skills, the good judgement, and the professional values and behaviors required to succeed as a health professional. We are privileged to be able to practice our profession, to be entrusted with the care of another human being, and to serve the public as autonomous health professionals. With this privilege comes many obligations, the greatest of which is to make a positive impact in the world. How will YOU fulfill your purpose? The pandemic WILL end and the promise of a great and exciting future will be fulfilled. We can’t wait to see what you will do!

Graduates, while this day is usually bittersweet – a time of endings and of new beginnings – today is made more poignant by our physical separation. However, it is often during times of crises, when what really matters is tested, and our true character is revealed. You have met the challenges of your training with intelligence, curiosity, determination, patience, and heart. You have developed new perspectives and relationships through self-reflection and openness to your colleagues, faculty, staff, and patients. Science and technology will continue to change and evolve, and your passion and commitment to be life-long learners will be essential. Yet, the personal and professional values that you have developed will be the foundation upon which you can continue to build excellence as an oral health care provider.

I know that I, along with the faculty and staff, are proud not only of all that you have achieved, but also for the manner in which you achieved all that brought you here today.

I also want to thank and congratulate the faculty and staff who taught, mentored and supported you, and thank your families and friends who have supported and encouraged you, for being the wind beneath your wings!!! and thank all of our students for being engaged, flexible, and committed professionals. You are ready to fly!

This class is special not only for graduating during a global pandemic, but also because of our 7^th cohort of students graduating from our International Dentist Program. We are privileged to have engendered the trust of these men and women, already dentists in their home country, who chose IUSD to complete additional education to become licensed to practice in the United States.

Since the mid-20^th century, the School of Dentistry has prioritized programs that attracted international students, including your Dean!. We have valued their contributions to IUSD, the global community, and the relationships that have resulted, paving the way for important research, education, and service opportunities. Strategic Globalization has been one of IU President McRobbie’s key priorities. We are fortunate to have our own long history of international education in our graduate and post-graduate dental programs and our relationship with a university that actively supports global engagement. These past months have highlighted for all of us, our need to collaborate with our colleagues across borders to address human issues unfettered by geographic boundaries.

For the second unprecedented year, we have had to forgo our Annual Dinner recognition of our many recipients of honors and awards listed in the front of your program. These students have been selected for their academic, clinical, leadership, and community achievements. They have demonstrated qualities needed to make a difference and advance the oral health of the public. We are grateful for the donors who have established these honors and awards that highlight values and behaviors respected by dental professionals and hope they will serve to inspire similar future endeavors. H. Jackson Brown, Jr., so eloquently said, “Don’t work for recognition, but do work worthy of recognition”. Class of 2021, we will watch with pride as you begin this next chapter, as IUSD alumni, in service to your patients and the broader global community. You will lead with science, integrity, and compassion as you address the needs of the individual, while advocating for and influencing the systems to improve the oral health of the public.

PROGRAM NOTE – INTRODUCTION OF ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESIDENT DR. MARTIN R. SZAKALY

It is now my pleasure, to welcome the president of the Indiana University School of Dentistry Alumni Association, Dr. Martin Szakaly. Dr. Szakaly graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1974, IUSD in 1978, and returned to South Bend, Indiana where he practiced until his retirement last year. Dr. Szakaly followed his father’s footsteps into dental practice and cared for the generational dental needs of many families of his hometown for forty-two rewarding years. Over the years, Dr. Szakaly earned the respect of his community and colleagues, evidenced by many positions of leadership including fellowship in the American College of Dentistry, the Academy of General Dentistry, the International College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. He has been a delegate to the Indiana Dental Association since 1983 and the American Dental Association since 2000. He has served as President of the Indiana Dental Association and North Central Dental Society, among many other leadership roles. In 2011, he was honored with the Indiana University School of Dentistry Distinguished Alumni Award. He earned the respect of his staff, who committed many years of loyalty to his practice and could count on Dr. Szakaly’ s sense of humor to play along with the annual April Fool’s joke. Along the way, Dr. Szakaly dedicated time to his community through his service as a basketball and baseball coach, staff member at Memorial Hospital, and member of the Indiana Historical Society. A passion for dentistry did not stop with Dr. Szakaly. His son, Dr. Brian Szakaly, an oral surgeon, is a 2005 graduate of the IUSD DDS program and a 2009 graduate of Virginia Commonwealth.

Next, I would like to welcome the President of the Indiana Dental Association, Dr. David Wolf.

Dr. David Wolf is a 1983 graduate of the University of Southern Indiana and a 1987 graduate of the Indiana University School of Dentistry. An Indiana native of Evansville, he has maintained his general dentistry practice in Greenwood, Indiana. Upon graduation, Dr. Wolf established himself as a true dental professional through his extensive and active service to his profession and his community. He has held several positions of leadership in the Indianapolis District Dental Society, including IDDS President in 2001. He has supported a wide array of political and community efforts through multiple leadership positions within the Indiana Dental Association, including current President. He has served for several years as an American Dental Association Delegate. In 2018, he was honored with the Dr. Don Scroggins Award for his outstanding political advocacy. He has been recognized for ethics, service and leadership as an invited fellow by the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists, and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. In 2018, the American College of Dentists-IN Section, recognized Dr. Wolf with the Ethics Award. In 1987, he attained membership in the Academy of General Dentistry. His community service has been dedicated to treating and lifting our fellow community members in need, locally, and abroad. He has donated his talents and treasure in service to the Donated Dental Services, the Wheeler Mission, the Esperanza En Jesucristo Clinic, and the Gennersaret Clinic in Indianapolis and abroad in Romania, Ecuador, and Haiti. For his service work, Dr. Wolf has been recognized with numerous awards including, the Gish Award in 2011, the Llyod J. Phillips Distinguished Service Award in 2015, the President’s Citation Award in 2018, and by “Remember the Children”, with their Humanitarian Award in 2018 for his annual mission service in Romania. As a devoted family man, when Dr. Wolf is not caring for his patients or his community, he spends time with his wife, Anne, and children, Andrea, Joe, and Adam.

Next, I’d like to welcome the President of the Indiana Dental Assistants’ Association, Ms. Meagan Morton.

Ms. Morton is a graduate of the University of Southern Indiana. She achieved her Associates Degree in Science and Certificate in Dental Assisting in 2015, the Dental Anesthesia Assistant National Certification Exam (DAANCE) certificate in 2016, and completes her Bachelor’s Degree in Health Service this month. Congratulations Ms. Morton! Ms. Morton has been devoted to the Indiana Dental Assisting Association and the Evansville Dental Assisting Society serving as Vice President, President-elect, and President multiple times in those associations since 2016. For her active professional involvement and commitment, she has been honored with the Anna Marie Dixon New Member Involvement Award and the American Dental Assistants Association New Member Involvement Award in 2017. In 2019, she was recognized by the Indiana Dental Assistants Association with the prestigious Vera Hewins Loyalty Award that recognizes one individual annually for their loyalty, commitment, and hard work in support of the dental assisting association.

Next, I’d like to welcome the President of the Indiana Dental Hygienists’ Association, Ms. Sheli Taulbee.

Sheli Taulbee has both Indiana and dentistry in her blood. A Fort Wayne native and the daughter of a dentist, Sheli Taulbee has long distinguished herself as a licensed dental hygienist since 1981, when she earned her Associate in Science Degree with Distinction from Indiana-Purdue University at Fort Wayne. Since 1981, when she assumed the role on a variety of committees as the IDHA Component Chair, she has actively served the IDHA in a number of positions until she assumed her current position in 2019 as IDHA President. Along with her steadfast commitment to her profession, she is dedicated to community service and leadership through the Matthew 25 Dental Clinic and the Indiana Dental Hygienists’ Association. She has dedicated forty years of service as regular volunteer at Matthew 25 Dental Clinic and has been on their Advisory Board since 2011. She has been recognized for her devotion to service with the IDHA Community Service Award and the Isaac Knapp Component Gloria Huxoll Membership Award, named after the first director of the School of Dental Hygiene at the Indiana Purdue University Fort Wayne campus.

Next, I would like to welcome the Past President of the Association of the Indiana Dental Laboratories, Ms. Brooke Pratt.

Ms. Pratt is a graduate of Indiana University Fort Wayne having accomplished her Associate in Science in Dental Laboratory Technology in 2006, her Bachelor of General Studies in 2008 and a Master of Public Management, Health Systems Administration and Policy in 2010. She is the Director of Dental Technology and a Clinical Assistant Professor at IU Fort Wayne. She has been actively engaged in multiple professional organizations and achieved leadership roles in the Association of Indian Dental Laboratories (AIDL) Board serving on the Board of Directors and President in 2018. She is passionate about dental education and served as the Educator Representative in the National Board of Certification (NBC) Board of Trustees since 2016. She is a site visitor for the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA). For her dedication to education and accomplishments the National Association of Dental Laboratories (NADL) awarded her the Educator of the Year in 2017 and the Journal of Dental Technology (JDT) selected her as the Who’s Hot 2016 recipient. Her professional commitment is also recognized through her service to the community and since 2011 she has devoted time to the Lafayette Street Dental Clinic, the Healthy Cities Service Project, Matthew 25, the Indiana Mission of Mercy and the Boy Scouts of America.

Please enter a few words about the novelty of this year’s keynote speaker(s).

Dr. Daniel Shin is 2006 DDS graduate from the State University of New York at Buffalo. He completed his MSD and certificate in periodontology at IUSD in 2009. In 2012, after a 3-years in private practice, he rejoined IUSD to serve as the Director of Predoctoral Periodontology. In addition, since 2018, he has served as a Comprehensive Care Clinic Director.

Dr. Michael Sovanich is a full-time clinical assistant professor with a focus on third and fourth-year predoctoral student clinical instruction and mentoring. Dr. Sovanich is also a clinic director and Director of the Screening/Intake/Emergency Clinic. He has served as volunteer faculty in the IUSD Student Outreach Clinic and on Global Service Learning trips to the Rosebud Indiana Reservation in South Dakota. Dr. Sovanich is also an active executive board member of the Indiana Academy of General Dentistry..

Dr. Steele graduated from IUSD in 1987 after which he participated in a General Practice Residency program at the Indianapolis Veteran’s Administration Hospital. For the three years following he was an associate in a Danville, Indiana practice and was director of dental services for the New Castle State Development Center. He then moved to Elkhart Indiana and spent the next 28 years in private practice. Dr. Steele joined IUSD part-time in 2016 and became a full-time clinic director in 2018. Dr. Steele also directs IUSD’s global service program helping our students experience cultural health and life issues different than their own.

Dr. Pinney was a co-owner of a private practice for fifteen years. During that time, he was also an adjunct faculty member in the Operative Dentistry Department. He then joined the faculty as a Clinic Director in the Comprehensive Care Department. He continues in private practice one day per week with DentalWorks. He has been associated with the School as a student, adjunct faculty, or full-time faculty for almost 44 years.

Dr. James Oldham received his DDS degree from IU School of Dentistry in 1983. He began teaching as an adjunct faculty member at IUSD in 2001 and became a clinic director in 2008. He is a consultant for the Commission on Dental Competencies and Assessments, He retired from US Army Reserve as a Colonel. He is active professional with the American Dental Association, the Indiana Dental Association, the Indianapolis District Dental Society, and is an invited fellow with the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and the Indiana Section of the American College of Dentists where he currently serves as the Secretary-Treasurer.

Dr. Timothy Treat is originally from Plymouth, IN. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 2010 and IU School of Dentistry in 2016. Following dental school, Dr. Treat completed a General Practice Residency at the Roudebush V.A. Medical Center in Indianapolis, IN before joining the faculty at IUSD in 2017. He is currently a Comprehensive Care Clinic Director and practices part-time at West 10th Dental Group in Indianapolis. Dr. Treat and his wife Kayla have a 2-year old daughter, Cami, and a baby boy on the way in September!

Dr. Daniel Bennett graduated from IU School of Dentistry in 1978 with Honors. He then put his private practice roots down in Pendleton, Indiana where he practiced for thirty-three years before retiring to become a full-time faculty member at IU School of Dentistry in 2013. The graduating senior dental class has selected Dr. Bennett for six out of his eight years at IUSD, to be a doctoral program faculty hooder. This year he received an additional honor when he was selected to receive the Distinguished Faculty Award for Teaching. We will miss Dr. Bennett dearly when he retires at the end of 2021.

Dr. Amul Singh hails from Canada. He is a graduate of the SUNY – University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine and completed a General Practice Residency at Ohio State. He has enjoyed being a faculty member at IUSD since 2008 and clinic director since 2009. He is also an adjunct faculty member at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry. Dr. Singh divides his time between teaching, his private practice he shares with his wife, and serving as a clinical board examiner. He has led dental outreach programs internationally to Honduras, Venezuala, and Kenya.

As we move into the future, global progress will depend on the prioritization of public health measures and international collaboration. Public health is close to my heart, personally and professionally. My vision for IUSD to be a truly excellent dental school is that we must excel in not only education, patient care, and research, but also effect changes in public health that reach beyond our own backyard and address the very systems that are at the root of health inequities, both locally and globally.

PROGRAM NOTE – RECOGNITION OF STUDENTS ENGAGED WITH ARMED SERVICES

Now, we would like to recognize the members of the U.S. Armed Services who are graduating today. The IUSD family deeply values the service, commitment and sacrifice of our U.S. Armed Service members. The Class of 2021 includes U.S. Armed Services Members. .With pride, we recognize our Doctor of Dental Surgery candidates from the Class of 2021.

Shayne Smith, Doctor of Dental Surgery, is a Captain and active member in the Indiana Army National Guard.
Shweta Thambad, Doctor of Dental Surgery, is an active Specialist in the U.S. Army.
Hannah Downhour, Bachelor of Science in Dental Hygiene, is an active Petty Officer Third Class in the U.S. Navy
Alice-Anne Alcorn, Master of Science in Dentistry, is an active Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy.

Please join me in a moment of silence to recognize and thank these members of the armed forces for their service.

PROGRAM NOTE – DDS PROGRAM FACULTY HOODERS

Before we present our candidates for the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree, we would like to recognize the faculty members chosen by the students to be this year’s honorary faculty hooders.

In 1897, the National Association of Dental Faculties chose lilac as the color of Dentistry to convey the valued qualities of compassion, purpose, and inspiration. Each year, our graduating Doctor of Dental Surgery class selects faculty whom they have identified as making a significant impact on their educational development. Traditionally, during our commencement ceremony, these honored faculty would place the lilac hood on the shoulders of our graduates. Graduates, as you step away from the safety and security of your alma mater, the Indiana University School of Dentistry, and into the known and unknown paths of your professional roles as oral health care providers, step with courage, pride, and optimism.

Science, collaboration, and a strong sense of purpose, have always paved the path forward for us. Dentistry leads the health professions in prevention, infection control, patient safety, and quality of care. Indiana University’s School of Dentistry’s legacy of excellence in clinical research and education continues through you, during an unprecedented time in our history. It is incredible to see the accelerated discovery and translational science that have produced rapid testing, treatments, public health interventions, and vaccines for COVID-19- all of this during your senior year! As the pandemic has accelerated existing trends- dentistry’s scope of practice is also changing - adding vaccinations and telehealth to our repertoire in many jurisdictions. We will likely see further expansion over the course of your careers.

The future of dentistry is “oral health fully recognized and valued as an integral component of overall health”. Dentistry has the potential – with graduates like you – to BE an essential member of the interprofessional team of health care providers in service to the needs of society, and critical to the overall wellbeing of humanity. You have been prepared, and are ready, to make an impact on your communities and the world!

The COVID-19 pandemic has left no part of our lives untouched over the last year. The situation has asked much from the Class of 2021 in terms of quick-thinking action and adaptability. These qualities were again on display as the School of Dentistry was forced to forgo our traditional, in-person commencement ceremony, and instead honor this year’s graduates with an online recognition event for the second straight year.

IUSD Dean Carol Anne Murdoch-Kinch hosted this ceremony live on Friday, May 14, 2021 with a mix of live remote and pre-recorded segments.

Dentistry graduates were also invited to participate in the official graduation ceremony for the IUPUI Campus which took place in-person on Saturday, May 15 2021.

Recognizing the Class of 2020

Last year traditional graduation ceremonies were disrupted for the first time since World War II. Instead of an in-person celebration, graduates gathered with family and friends via live video stream on Friday, May 15, 2020.

IUSD Dean Carol Anne Murdoch-Kinch; lead the event LIVE from the IU School of Dentistry. She was joined remotely by keynote speaker Dr. Paul Halverson, founding dean of the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health; and other honored speakers.

Welcome, to our 2020 Recognition Ceremony!

Class of 2020, congratulations!

There is much to celebrate today as we come together, in a historic way, to honor and recognize our graduates. Certainly, we may be grappling with a sense of disappointment and loss that we will have to wait to watch our graduates, garbed in full commencement regalia, walk across the stage. Our traditional commencement ceremony will be re-scheduled to a time when we can safely come together as a large group. However, wherever we are, and however we witness, honor and celebrate our graduates today, we are thankful to have been a part of their journey, and proud of all they have accomplished.

There is power in the act of coming together in celebration of the significant moments in our lives and being together to mark them in the passage of time. Traditions exist to mark and celebrate important transitions in our lives with the people who have been significant to us along the way. Today, we more fully appreciate the privilege of coming together, as the risks to personal and public safety from being in close contact are very real. Nevertheless, we gather in a way that is emblematic of the past months, and how we, as an IUSD family, have responded to our current and past challenges – with ingenuity, resilience, collaboration, and caring. This is who we are.

The external world, and the dental profession, are being impacted currently in a way previously seen only during wartime and with other infectious disease epidemics. Thirty years ago, at the beginning of the AIDS pandemic, I spent five years here at Indiana University School of Dentistry as a resident. The IU School of Dentistry revealed itself as a leader in caring for affected individuals in its Special Care Clinic. What I saw at IUSD during my time here, was a commitment to tackling tough problems through a combination of creating and applying new scientific knowledge, excellent technical skills, and soul. We used our heads, our hands, and our hearts, by embodying care and compassion for our patients and each other. We have leaned on those same core values these past months, to guide patient care, re-design our curriculum, support the academic progression of all of our students, and to produce today’s recognition ceremony for the Class of 2020.

Graduates, while this day is usually bittersweet – a time of endings and of new beginnings – today is made more poignant by our physical separation. It is often during times of crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, when what really matters is tested, and our true character is revealed. You have met the challenges of your training with intelligence, curiosity, determination, patience, and heart. You have developed new perspectives and relationships through self-reflection and openness to your colleagues, faculty, staff, and patients. Science and technology will continue to change and evolve, and your passion and commitment to be life-long learners will be essential. Yet, the personal and professional values that you have developed will be the foundation upon which you can continue to build excellence as an oral health care provider. No race is ever won in the first mile, but rather with the finish, and Class of 2020, you have finished strong.

I know that I, along with the faculty and staff, are proud not only of all that you have achieved, but also for the manner in which you achieved all that brought you here today

I also want to thank and congratulate the faculty and staff who supported you; thank your families and friends who have supported and encouraged you and for being the wind beneath your wings!!!; and thank all of our students for being engaged and flexible during this great upheaval in your education and in the world. You are ready to fly!

This class is special not only for graduating during Indiana University’s bicentennial celebration and a global pandemic, but also because of our 6^th cohort of students graduating from our International Dentist Program. We are privileged to have engendered the trust of these men and women, already dentists in their home country, who chose IUSD for our International Dentist Program to become licensed to practice in the United States.

Since the mid-20^th century, the School of Dentistry has prioritized programs that attracted international students. We have valued their contributions to IUSD, the global community, and the relationships that have resulted, paving the way for important research, education, and service opportunities. Strategic Globalization is one of IU President McRobbie’s key 2020 Bicentennial priorities. We are fortunate to have our own long history of international education in our graduate and post-graduate dental programs and our relationship with a university that actively supports global engagement. The COVID-19 pandemic clearly reveals our need to collaborate with our colleagues across borders to address human issues unfettered by geographic boundaries.

At this time, I’d like to acknowledge our many recipients of honors and awards, which are listed in the front of your program. Traditionally, we would have recognized these deserving students for their academic, clinical, and community achievements at an Annual Awards Dinner earlier this month. We regret that we were unable to honor them in that way this year, but hope that they know how proud we are of their high achievements, which will be acknowledged on their individual slides as their names are read.

Class of 2020, we will watch with pride as you begin this next chapter, as IUSD alumni, in service to your patients and the broader global community. You will lead with science, integrity, and compassion as you address the needs of the individual, while advocating for and influencing the systems to improve the oral health of the public.

It is now my pleasure, to welcome the president of the Indiana University School of Dentistry Alumni Association, Dr. Amy Gerardot. Dr. Gerardot graduated from IU Bloomington with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and Psychology in 1997, and from the IU School of Dentistry in 2001. She grew up in Anderson, Indiana, and located her general dentistry practice in nearby Muncie, where she has served the community since 2004. Her patients’ trust is a guiding element of her practice philosophy, which is to recognize each patient as an individual, and center her delivery of dental care on relationship building through the prevention, early detection, and treatment of disease. She has served on the IU School of Dentistry Alumni Board since 2012. Her professional career is balanced by her loving family, which includes three teenage daughters. Dr. Gerardot….

PROGRAM NOTE – INTRODUCTION OF IDA PRESIDENT ELECT DR. STEVEN HOLLAR

Next, I would like to welcome the President-Elect of the Indiana Dental Association, Dr. Steven Hollar.

Dr. Steven Hollar graduated from the Indiana University School of Dentistry in 1993, and has practiced in Warsaw, Indiana, for the past 27 years. Dr. Hollar has been actively involved in numerous professional, community, and civic organizations. He has served in the ADA House of Delegates, and as the 7^th District Chairman of the Public Affairs and Legal and Legislative Councils. He is also an IDA delegate and Chairman of the IDA COVID-19 Task Force. He has served as President of the Indiana State Board of Dentistry and the North Central Dental Society. Under Representative Todd Rokita, Dr. Hollar was appointed to the Health Care Advisory Committee of the United States Congress. He has been recognized for his service contributions as a Fellow of both the American College of Dentists and the International College of Dentists, andwas recognized by the Indiana Section of the American College of Dentists in 2014 with the Ethics Achievement Award. In 2016, Governor Pence awarded Dr. Hollar the Sagamore of the Wabash award for his distinguished service.

In addition to his profession and his community, basketball and family have played central roles in Dr. Hollar’s life. He was a point-guard on the Warsaw Community High School Basketball State Championship team in 1984, played the role of Rade Butcher in the 1986 film, Hoosiers, and was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2009.

This is a special time for the Hollar family. Dr. Hollar’s son, Bennett, graduates today in the DDS Class of 2020. And his younger son, Charlie, begins his DDS studies with us in July. Charlie is the namesake of his grandfather, Charles Hollar, who graduated from the IU School of Dentistry in 1964, and I imagine is watching along proudly as his grandsons continue his legacy as the third generation of IUSD dental graduates.

Ms. Taulbee has both Indiana and dentistry in her blood. A Fort Wayne native and the daughter of a dentist, she has long distinguished herself as a licensed dental hygienist since 1981, when she earned her Associate in Science Degree with Distinction from Indiana-Purdue University at Fort Wayne. Along with her steadfast commitment to her profession, she is dedicated to community service and leadership through the Matthew 25 Dental Clinic and the Indiana Dental Hygienists’ Association. She has been recognized for her devotion to service with the IDHA Community Service Award and the Isaac Knapp Component Gloria Huxoll Membership Award, named after the first director of the School of Dental Hygiene at the Indiana Purdue University Fort Wayne campus. Ms. Vollrath grew up in Terre Haute, Indiana, and left to attend the University of Southern Indiana. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with degrees in Dental Assisting and Health Administration. She proudly holds her CDA and is also an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant. Ms. Vollrath is an assistant for the dental practice of Dr. Mark Sitzman and Dr. Michael Wolf in Southern Indiana and has served as President of her local dental association, among other officer positions and committees. It is my absolute pleasure to introduce our keynote speaker, Dr. Paul Halverson, who is founding dean of the Indiana University Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health in Indianapolis. Dr. Halverson is a colleague, as well as a friend and enthusiastic partner to the School of Dentistry as a world-recognized expert in public health.

Dr. Halverson came to Indiana University from the Arkansas Department of Health, where he served as state health officer and director. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Halverson served in senior management roles at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including senior advisor in the office of strategy and innovation, senior scientist and director of the division of public health systems development and research, director of the CDC’s World Health Organization’s Collaborating Center for Public Health, and director of the National Public Health Performance Standards program. Before joining the CDC, Dr. Halverson served as the senior health policy advisor for the North Carolina Department of Environment, Health, and Natural Resources.

Dr. Halverson began his career in health administration as a hospital and health system executive and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He earned his master’s degree in health services administration from Arizona State University and a doctorate in public health from the University of North Carolina. During the COVID-19 health crisis, Dr. Halverson and his faculty members have been interviewed in numerous newspapers and journals to lend their public health expertise. Amidst the Great Depression, in 1932, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt spoke in reference of his New Deal, "In these days of difficulty, we Americans everywhere must and shall choose the path of social justice...the path of faith, the path of hope, and the path of love toward our fellow man." Americans and the world are facing complex social challenges similar to the Great Depression, which require the attention and investment from all. Dentistry, while sometimes in the background, has a critical role to play. Graduates, as you step away from the safety and security of your alma mater, the Indiana University School of Dentistry, and into the known and unknown paths of your professional roles as oral health care providers, step with courage, pride, and optimism. While there is still much anxiety and uncertainty about the impact of COVID-19 on the practice and the profession of dentistry, you are the future. And the future of dentistry is oral health fully recognized and valued as an integral component of overall health. Dentistry has the potential – with graduates like you – to be an essential member of the interprofessional team of health care providers in service to the needs of society, and critical to the overall wellbeing of humanity. You have been prepared, are ready, to make an impact on your communities and the world!
