Dental Hygiene

Courses for dental hygienists

We are committed to bringing you the latest ideas and concepts to energize you and your practice.

The School of Dentistry’s hygiene series is one of our longest ongoing continuing education programs. You will earn 5 CEUs for participating in the individual lectures, a total of 15 for the series. Check our events calendar to find out when the next series begins.

Don’t forget! License renewal is due on March 1 each year. The rules include 19 hours of CEUs in the two years prior—10 hours of which must be completed ON SITE, as opposed to online. You must also complete two hours of ethics and jurisprudence, which are included in part two of our series.

Hygienists must also complete a CPR course. Only two hours can be counted toward your CE requirement.

If you are registering more than one person from the same office, you will need to register each person individually and check the box for the additional participant discount. The office name must be listed on all registrations if registering more than one person.

Refund policy

  • For the entire series: No refunds will be issued for the series within four weeks of the first session. There will be no refunds for any missed sessions.
  • For individual programs: No refunds will be issued less than two weeks prior to each course.

There is a $30 cancellation fee for the series and $20 for each individual course for any refunds issued. There will be no transfer of enrollment to other programs or to other individuals.

This program is designed for licensed dental hygienists who want to receive certification in the administration of block and local infiltration anesthesia. You must be a currently licensed dental hygienist practicing in Indiana to take this course, as well as current in basic life support for the health care provider.

Once registered, you will receive instructions on how to set up online access to the course podcasts. You will also need to purchase the course textbook Handbook of Local Anesthesia by Dr. Stanley Malamed. You must review the text, access all podcasts, and pass the review quizzes prior to attending the first session. The first session will be followed by two lab/clinic sessions. Check our events calendar to find out when the course will be offered next.

Upon completion, you will be eligible to take the CDCA (formerly the NERB) Local Anesthesia Exam and apply for the required Indiana local anesthesia permit. Participants will act as live patients for practice and competency checks. Each participant is required to sign a release in order to participate. Attendance is required at all sessions.

If you have questions with regard to the course, please contact the School of Dentistry’s Continuing Education office for assistance or additional information at 888-373-4873 or dsce@iupui.edu.
