Avoiding Prosthetic Complications with Single Implants &
Which Type of All-Ceramic Crown is Best?Presented by Charles Goodacre, DDS, MS
Dr. Goodacre’s first lecture will discuss implant complications. While implants offer substantial patient benefits, complications can occur. This presentation will review the most common single implant complications reported between 1981 and 2001 and compare that data with the complications reported between 2001 and 2017. Based on that data, the presentation will identify which complications have decreased and which ones have increased. Methods of preventing the most common complications with implant single crowns will be described and illustrated
The second part of Dr. Goodacre’s lecture will cover ceramic crowns. All-ceramic crowns are typically fabricated using either zirconia or lithium disilicate materials. This presentation will describe and illustrate the characteristics of teeth that determine the type of material that will produce the best esthetic result.
Following Part 1 of this course, attendees will be able to:
- Identify the most common complications associated with dental implants.
- Determine which complications have changed between the first 20 years of use and the current status of complications.
- Know how to avoid or minimize the most common complications.
Following Part 2 of this course, attendees will be able to:
- Describe the importance of translucency and dentin opacity as it relates to the type of crown to be used.
- Understand the affect of dentin discoloration on the type of crown material to be used.
- Know which type of material is best suited for teeth where minimal tooth preparation is present.
Dr. Goodacre earned his MSD degree in Prosthodontics and Dental Materials at Indiana University School of Dentistry and in 1974. He is a past Chair of Prosthodontics at IUSD. He served as Dean of the Loma Linda University School of Dentistry from 1994-2013. He is the recipient of numerous awards in prosthodontics and education including the 2019 American College of Dentists William J. Gies Award. Disclosures: Nobel Biocare Lecturer

Extending the Ethical Obligation of Duty to CarePresented by Lawrence P. Garetto, PhD, FACD
A duty to care is one of the highest callings of a healthcare professional. It is an obligation that, to be effective, must be accepted by individuals graduating from health professional educational programs. But not just “accepted”, it must also be acted upon by professionals in providing care for another human being. However, from an ethical perspective, the duty to care is as poorly defined as the much invoked “societal contract” responsibilities expected not only of the profession, but also of individual practitioners within. Beyond thinking of this as a broad society-wide obligation, we can extend the general scope of duty to care across multiple specific aspects of professional life. It is necessarily present when providing care for the individual patient. But it can also be invoked in how professionals “care” for each other and the profession through self-regulation and peer review. Duty to care may also be especially significant in times of disruption and certainly in this time of pandemic. The goal of this presentation is to provoke an expanded thinking about the meaning and obligation of duty to care in the outpatient healthcare setting of dentistry.
Objectives:
- Define the concept of duty to care and distinguish ethical and legal components.
- Discuss and more directly explain the much-invoked concept of a “societal contract” expected of true professions.
- Distinguish the clinical ethical and professional standards elements of healthcare ethics
- Describe the transformative potential of a societal disruption such as pandemic on the nature of dentistry in healthcare.
Dr. Garetto is Professor Emeritus of Oral Pathology, Medicine and Radiology at Indiana University School of Dentistry and Affiliate Instructor at the University of Washington School of Dentistry. He received his bachelor’s degree from Revelle College of the University of California, San Diego, master’s degree from Boston University and his PhD from the Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Garetto completed a fellowship in Clinical Ethics at the Charles Warren Fairbanks Center for Medical Ethics at IU Health Methodist Hospital and subsequently served on the faculty of this program. He is Past-President of the American Society for Dental Ethics and served as an ethics liaison to the Board of Regents of the American College of Dentists. Dr. Garetto’s scholarly work centers on the ethical nature of clinical reasoning.
